Battery-Powered Nail Gun: What & Why

As of today, we are here with the working diagram of a battery-powered nail gun, which is also known as a cordless nail gun. First of all, let’s see what a cordless nail gun is.

Figure: Cordless Nail Gun

The nail gun is a kind of power tool by which you can drive nails into any hard surface like wood, metals, or concrete. Like all the power tools, a nail gun needs the power to operate. On the basis of operating power, nail guns are two types; one is pneumatic nail guns which are operated with the force of compressed air.

On the other hand, cordless nail guns are operated by rechargeable batteries or battery clamps. You needn’t connect to an air hose or power cable to run the unit. So this type of nail gun is easy to carry and easy to operate.

The Benefit of Battery-Powered Nail Gun

Pneumatic nail guns are powerful and fit for industrial work. However, cordless nail guns are light to carry and hassle-free. And you cannot deny the benefit of battery-powered nail guns.

  • Easy to Carry:

Battery-powered nail guns are compact and lightweight. As this nail gun is cordless. It does not require any hose or power cable to operate. So it’s easy to carry the lightweight tool.

  • Budget-Friendly:

Cordless battery-powered nail guns are budget-friendly and cheaper than pneumatic nail guns. Even they required no maintenance cost. Even you needn’t an additional air compressor for operating the unit.

Again, it’s easy to operate by single users. So you needn’t extra labor cost for this handy device.

  • Fastest and Easiest Nailing:

Corded/ pneumatic nail guns required additional power to run the compressor. As a result, it’s tough to move the whole unit while driving nails. But cordless nail guns work faster and are easy to carry from one place to another for light bodyweight.

  • Less Power Requirement:

Cordless nail guns operate with the potential energy of battery clamps. And most of the time, the battery is 20V and rechargeable. So you can easily plug in the nail gun with 110 Volts AC.

How does Battery Nail Guns Work?

Every power tool has a principle of working. Battery-powered cordless nail guns work with the rotation of a spinning flywheel. There is a spinning flywheel inside every battery-powered nail gun. When the user presses the trigger, the flywheel remains in motion. And with this motion, the motor drives forward, pulling the nails into a hard surface.

On the other hand, a cordless pneumatic nail gun has a series of internal gas chambers or air tanks to store compressed air. And the motor works when the compressed air pressed the motor to move forward. And the front part of the gun, which is also known as the internal piston, forces the blade to move forward and drives the nail into a hard surface.

The Method of Nailing

Accurate nailing is nothing but a mixture of some tricks. What you must follow is to maintain the safety measures. While nailing small dust particles or debris is formed. And if the user does not wear goggles, these small particles may enter into the eye, causing serious injury. Again, if you don’t use the nail gun carefully, the nail may harm the hand. So safety measure is an inseparable issue for nailing.

Filling the Magazine

First thing first, loading the magazine. Every nail gun has a magazine. Most of the magazine has 100 nails capacity. Before nailing, what you must do is fill the magazine with nail strips.

After loading the magazine, load the gun with the magazine. And then seal the opening of the gun.

Driving the Nail into Accurate Direction

After preparing the gun, now you are ready to go. What you must focus on is driving the nail in an accurate direction. And for correct blow, you need to practice some test shots before nailing the object.

While nailing, you must focus on safety measures like wearing heavy gloves and goggles. Grip the gun firmly with two hands onto the position. And place two legs apart from each other to avoid kickback of the gun.

Corded Nail Gun vs Cordless Nail Gun Which One is the Best

  • Corded nail guns are more powerful and have a longer lifespan than cordless ones. Though corded nailers are heavy duty, they required more maintenance costs.
  • As pneumatic nail guns are connected with the air compressor by an air hose, it creates hassle while moving the nail gun around the room. On the contrary, cordless nail guns are easy to move around for wireless design.
  • Again, battery nail guns operate with rechargeable batteries. So you can use the gun where electricity is not available like construction sites and woodworking. However, corded nail guns need electricity or compressed air to work. And sometimes electricity remains unavailable in new construction sites.
  • From the above, it’s clear that cordless nail guns are best where portability is a major issue. And corded nail guns are suitable for large automotive nailing projects.

Maintenance Process

If you want to get something better you need to give something in return, needn’t you? This saying is also acceptable for nail guns. The nails may create jam or debris while nailing. Sometimes the nail may clog inside. Even if the trigger may not work properly resulting in stopping the machine. So, for getting flawless service from your nail gun what you must follow is regular maintenance.

And in this section, we are additionally giving you the tips of maintenance for getting hassle-free service from your nail gun.

  • Clean the junk after every use of the nail gun
  • Check out the bolt and screw of the gun in a routine way to make sure the connection is properly sealed or not
  • If the bolts are loose, then tighten the connection
  • Check out the expiry date of the battery
  • Don’t forget to inspect the battery after every 6 months
  • After three years, you need to change the battery
  • Never keep a battery-powered nail gun useless for a long span of time as rust may clog the magazine
  • For preventing rust, what you must do is the regular cleaning of the nail gun
  • After every use, clean the gun with a soft rug
