How to Change Table Saw Blade

How to Change Table Saw Blade

The table saw is a very important power tool for woodworking. You cannot imagine professional woodworks or a wood workshop without a table saw. The table saw consists of a table, a circular shaped blade mounting on an arbor, and a motor which runs the blade. It is called a table saw because the blade of this saw protrudes through the bottom of the table. The table provides support to the workpiece to move it towards the saw.

  • table saw blade

Table saw is a heavy-duty saw. This is why the blade of the table saw wears out or becomes dull in a while. When the blade becomes unusable, it needs to be changed and which is a must to do to ensure proper working. You may also need to change the blade for making different kinds of cuts that you might need to do for various projects. How to Change Table Saw Blade

Required materials

table saw wrenches

First of all, you need a table saw whose blade you are going to change. Secondly, you need wrenches. It is better if you have two blade wrenches. Wrenches come with most of the table saws. Some people think that it is an unnecessary part of the table saw and throw it away at first when they see it with the saw. Some people keep it away and then do not find it. It is better if you have the wrenches of your table saw with you. And if you do not have the wrenches, do not worry. You can use the regular adjustable wrenches for this work. These are the things that you must have for changing table saw blade. Then, you might need a screwdriver for unscrewing any screw in some part of the table saw.

Process of changing a table saw blade

The first and the foremost and the most important task for changing a table saw blade is to turn off the saw and unplug it from the electric power source. A table saw might be one of the most useful power saw for woodworking. But it is also the most dangerous and ferocious and unforgiving power tool. So extreme caution should be maintained whenever you are working with the table saw; whether you are changing the blade or working with the table saw to cut something for any project you have on hand. Make one simple mistake and you will regret this for the rest of your entire life. So please be careful while working with a table saw.

Your next job is to remove the throat blade and the blade guard of the table saw. This process is not the same for all the saws. Check the instructions manual that came with the table saw to know how exactly to remove the throat plate and the blade guard of your table saw. For example, if they are screwed with the saw, then use the screwdriver now to unscrew them.

Now, you can see that the blade is mounted on a shaft called the arbor, secured with arbor nut and the washer. Now, you need the wrenches to loosen the arbor nut.

Method-1

Use one of the wrenches to hold and secure the arbor and use the other one to loosen the arbor nut.

Method-2

This method is most common in small and portable table saws. This method is only applicable if the table saw has a feature called the arbor lock. It is a small lever which is located near the arbor. This arbor lock locks the arbor in place. Unlock the arbor lock and then use the wrench to loosen the arbor nut.

When the nut is free, the next job is to remove the washer. After removing the washer, the blade is free for removal. Take the old blade off and then insert the new blade. Keep it in mind that when you are inserting the new blade, the teeth should be pointing towards you and not away from you. Now, changing the table saw blade is finished.

Next, you have to do everything you have done so far, but in reverse. Put the washer back in the place and then the nut. Tighten the nut in the same way you had loosen it. Either by using one of the wrenches to hold the arbor and losing the arbor nut with the other wrench. Or by pulling the arbor lock. Just the way you have done it before.

Now all that is left is just to replace the blade guard and also the throat plate back in the place. And this would be everything about how to change Table saw blade.

Do not forget to choose the right type of blade for your table saw and also for the type of work you are going to do with the table saw. Using the right blade is also very crucial for ensuring a perfect cutting project.
